Whole-Wheat Honey Dinner Rolls

I recently converted to eating only homemade bread and I love it. We no longer have to pop to the supermarket every day to buy a loaf of bread that’s packed with preservatives and tastes like floor. Yes, floor. How do I know it tastes like floor? Let’s just say I had a lot of spare time, very little adult supervision, and a little too much curiosity when I was a toddler.

These dinner rolls are the best dinner rolls I've ever had. The flavours of the rustic whole wheat flour and sweet honey work amazingly together in these soft-as-a-cloud rolls. I think they’re a bit overly-sweet to go with an evening meal, but they are a divine accompaniment for breakfast or lunch.

I came across this fantastic recipe for Whole-Wheat Honey Dinner Rolls from Country Momma Cooks. You should definitely check her blog out – she has the best bread recipes. I followed her recipe for Easy Yeast Rolls to the letter last month and they were amazing, so I followed suit and didn't change this recipe at all.

Well, not much anyway. I only had salted butter, so I omitted the added salt. The original recipe also called for the rolls to be baked in a muffin pan, but I thought it would be better to bake them in a large baking tray.

Whole-Wheat Honey Dinner Rolls
Recipe from Country Momma Cooks
Ingredients
1 cup warm water
¼ cup honey
3 teaspoons dry active yeast
1 beaten egg
¼ cup melted unsalted butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups white flours
1 ¼ cups whole wheat flour

Recipe
1. In a large bowl, stir the honey into the warm water until it’s dissolved. Add the yeast and leave for 5 minutes.

2. In the bowl of your stand mixer with the dough hooks attached, mix the yeast mixture, egg, salt and melted butter then gradually add the flours.

3. Mix on a medium speed for at least 5 minutes.

4. Scoop the dough out of the bowl and shape into a ball. Place the ball in a well-oiled bowl and leave to rise for an hour.

5. Punch the dough down and separate it into 12 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place into a large greased baking tray. Leave the rolls to rise for another hour.

6. Bake the rolls at 350F/175C for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
